Step 1: Clean Your Vehicle Thoroughly

A thoroughly cleaned vehicle is particularly important when importing into Australia.

Pay close attention to the undercarriage, wheel arches, engine bay and interior, where soil, seeds, plant material and other contamination can collect.

Vehicles arriving in Australia are subject to Australian biosecurity requirements and may be inspected on arrival. If contamination is detected, additional cleaning or treatment may be required at the owner’s expense.

Preparing the vehicle properly before shipment can help reduce the risk of unnecessary delays and additional costs.

Step 2: Remove Personal Belongings

RoRo shipping does not allow any personal effects inside the vehicle for safety and customs reasons. Ensure your car’s cabin, trunk, and glove box are completely emptied before shipping.

Step 3: Check for Leaks and Mechanical Issues

Inspect your vehicle for any fluid leaks (oil, coolant, fuel) that could cause problems during transit. Fix all leaks and perform basic maintenance, including checking tire pressure, battery condition, and brakes. Your car must be fully operable and able to move under its own power.

Step 4: Fuel Tank Preparation

RoRo carriers generally place limits on the amount of fuel permitted in a vehicle during shipping. A maximum of around one-quarter of a tank is common, although the exact requirement can vary depending on the carrier, route and vehicle type.

SEA GO will confirm the applicable fuel requirement as part of your booking instructions. Make sure the fuel cap is securely closed and that the vehicle has enough fuel to be driven during loading and unloading.

Step 5: Disable the Alarm and Secure Loose Parts

Disarm any alarms to avoid unnecessary noise during transit. Secure or remove loose parts such as antennas, spoilers, or roof racks that could get damaged or cause damage.

Step 6: Document Preparation

Have all required vehicle and shipping documents ready before your nominated delivery or collection date.

Depending on the shipment, these may include:

• Vehicle registration
• Proof of ownership or purchase documents
• Identification documents
• Shipping documentation
• Import or export approvals where required

If you are importing a road vehicle into Australia, you must obtain the appropriate Vehicle Import Approval before the vehicle is imported. SEA GO can assist with the documentation and Vehicle Import Approval process where required.

Step 7: Booking and Final Inspection

Once your RoRo shipping booking is confirmed, SEA GO will provide the final preparation instructions relevant to your vehicle, route and shipping line. This may include confirmation of the required fuel level, vehicle condition, documentation, port delivery or collection arrangements and any destination-specific requirements.
